Google Pixel Update: Gemini Nano and New Practical Features
Google's latest feature update for Pixel devices is undoubtedly a boon for those who want to experience its AI technology on more affordable phones, users who often struggle to find their misplaced phones, and photographers who desire more control over their shots.
Starting today, this update makes the previously exclusive Gemini Nano model, which was only available to Pixel 8 Pro users, also an option for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A smartphones. Just recently, Apple announced a series of new AI features for its platform, but similar to Google's initial (later retracted) announcement, Apple's new AI feature, Apple Intelligence, is only available to the latest iPhone 15 Pro users.
However, on the slightly lower-spec Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A devices, users need to enable this feature in the developer options. In an interview with the "Made by Google" podcast, Seang Chau, Vice President of Google's Devices and Services Software, explained that this switch is intentionally provided as an option for users. It aims to caution those who understand that running AI models on devices with less memory may have a "potential impact" on the user experience, such as the Summarize and Smart Reply features in Recorder.
If you are a Pixel 8 Pro user or have enabled Gemini Nano in the developer settings, you will also enjoy an additional benefit: a "more detailed and downloadable summary" of recorded conversations. Furthermore, this update brings the added availability of the "Find My Device" feature to the Pixel 8 series, which can locate your phone for at least 23 hours even when it is turned off or the battery is drained. Additionally, it adds support for Display Port output via the USB-C interface, allowing you to easily view your phone's interface on a larger screen.
For some older and more affordable Pixel phones, such as the Pixel 6 and newer versions, and the Pixel Fold, there are also some practical additions. For example, a new shortcut in call logs enables easy reverse phone number searches, helping you identify who called first.
Moreover, on Pixel 6 and newer devices, as well as the Pixel Fold, there is a new feature in HDR Plus that identifies the "best moment" in photos. However, if you want to manually select which camera lens to use when taking photos, you will need to opt for higher-end Pixel phones. This feature is available for the Pixel Fold and the Pro versions of Pixel 6, 7, and 8 phones.
