OpenAI May Launch GPT Marketplace Next Week, Enabling Users to Sell and Share Custom AI Agents

OpenAI's GPT Store is about to open for business.

In an email sent to GPT builders, OpenAI stated that users will be able to sell and share customized AI agents based on OpenAI's large language models in the GPT Store, which will officially launch next week. The email asks users to carefully review their GPT creations to ensure compliance with brand guidelines and reminds them to make their GPT works public.

OpenAI first announced at its November Developer Conference that it would allow others to build AI agents called GPT using its GPT-4 large language model. This feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus and enterprise subscribers, enabling people to create customized versions of ChatGPT-style chatbots that range from explaining Generation Z to guiding people in negotiations. While customized GPTs built by OpenAI can be accessed through the exploration tags of ChatGPT Plus, the store will allow users to share and monetize their GPTs. OpenAI stated that it plans to find a way to compensate GPT creators based on the frequency of people using their AI agents in the store, but it has not yet released more details about this plan.

The store was originally scheduled to launch in November, but it was delayed due to OpenAI's busy schedule that month, including the dismissal and subsequent rehiring of CEO Sam Altman. The date was then postponed to December and subsequently delayed again.
