Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a new smart home device, potentially an intelligent display, expected to launch next year. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, this device will run a new operating system named homeOS, developed based on the existing tvOS (the operating system for Apple TV).
The report indicates that the display will be capable of running Apple applications such as Calendar, Notes, and Home. Additionally, Apple is testing prototypes with magnetic backings to facilitate wall mounting. The device will also support Apple’s smart technologies, a feature not available in the current HomePod.
Rumors about such products have been circulating for some time, ranging from HomePods with built-in screens to display monitors featuring robotic arms that can rotate for user video calls. However, recent speculations appear to be more specific.
Another recent rumor suggests that the upcoming "HomeAccessory" device will have a square design and may allow users to control it through long-distance gesture commands. MacRumors has also reported code references related to the device and homeOS.
Compared to previous robotic screen concepts, this type of display seems more practical. It might also be more convenient and economical than using an iPad as a dedicated smart home controller. Specific information regarding the product’s release and availability is yet to be confirmed by Apple.
