The Huawei Pura X was unveiled on March 20 in Shenzhen, starting at 7,499 yuan ($1,037), marking a significant milestone for the company. This is the first phone to run on HarmonyOS 5, Huawei’s fully self-developed operating system, signaling a complete departure from Android and ending reliance on U.S. technology.
A clamshell design, but wider
At first glance, the Pura X resembles a conventional flip phone — compact, square, and easy to carry when folded. However, when opened, it reveals a 6.3-inch inner display with an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio, offering users more screen space than ever before. The outer screen is a 3.5-inch square display that allows you to check messages, answer calls, or take photos without unfolding the device.
Powered by HarmonyOS, not Android
The Pura X is Huawei’s first phone to completely abandon Android, replacing it with the latest version of its proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS 5.
This shift marks a bold move for Huawei, which has been under U.S. sanctions since 2019, cutting off access to Google services. The device also introduces Xiaoyi, Huawei’s AI assistant, powered by its Pangu model and enhanced via DeepSeek AI. It can handle everything from voice commands to next-gen features like eye-tracking page turning.
Powerful camera and battery life
Inside, the Pura X is equipped with a 4,720mAh battery, supporting 66W fast charging and 40W wireless charging. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC, while the collector’s edition includes satellite communication capabilities.
For photography enthusiasts, the device offers a 50MP main sensor, a 40MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 3.5x optical zoom, and a dedicated color sensor, all optimized by Huawei’s imaging technology. Whether folded or unfolded, you can capture professional-grade photos and 4K videos.
The bigger picture
For Huawei, the Pura X is more than just another phone — it’s a statement. The company has fully moved away from Android, betting big on its own software and AI. The Pura X comes in various stylish options: Moon Shadow Gray, Zero White, Midnight Black, and two collector’s editions with premium finishes and up to 1TB of storage. The top-tier version is priced at 9,999 yuan ($1,500).
Although the Pura X is currently limited to the Chinese market, its bold design and software independence will undoubtedly draw global attention.
