Adobe Launches New Application to Protect Users' Artwork from AI Infringement

2024-10-09

Adobe, a leading software company, announced on Tuesday, October 8, the launch of a new application called Adobe Content Authenticity. This tool is designed to safeguard artists and their creations from unauthorized use, including for AI training purposes.

The application will function as a platform for the company's Content Credentials system, which was introduced several years ago. Adobe refers to it as the "nutrition label" for online content.

What is Adobe Content Authenticity?

This application enables users to swiftly add information about how images, videos, or audio clips were created. Additionally, users can include their names and social media links, and opt out on a large scale from the use of their content for training generative AI.

When Content Credentials are added, a small icon will appear in the corner of the content. Users can click on it to view the embedded metadata.

The tool is currently available in select Adobe applications, including Firefly and Photoshop.

Artists will be pleased to know that this application will add credentials to all their works, not just those created on Adobe platforms.

Adobe's Chief Strategy Officer, Scott Belsky, stated, "By providing creators with a simple, free, and convenient way to attach Content Credentials to their work, we are helping them maintain the integrity of their creations while ushering in a new era of online transparency and trust."

However, creators should be aware that the "Do Not Train AI" option is only available to developers registered with Adobe's voluntary program. Fortunately, the program currently includes 3,700 members committed to digital transparency.

Earlier this year, Adobe faced criticism from customers after updating its terms and conditions, which indicated that Adobe might automatically and manually access user content.

The free beta version of Adobe Content Authenticity is set to launch early next year. Users will need an Adobe account, but no subscription is required.
