Google Renames AI Chatbot Bard to Gemini

2024-02-04

Google seems to be planning to rename its AI chatbot Bard to Gemini. The new branding direction is similar to Microsoft, which renamed its AI chatbot from Bing Chat to Copilot in November last year and integrated several complementary products and services in the process.

According to Dylan Roussel's sharing on X, the web application code reveals hidden user interface notifications, confirming the new brand name.

In addition, in the latest beta version of the Android Google application, all references to Bard in the code have been changed to Gemini.

This brand integration marks Google's intention to unify its AI products under the name Gemini, simplifying the identification of its AI identity in products and services. Currently, the company has announced the availability of Bard powered by Gemini Pro in 230 countries and 40 languages. They are also preparing to launch a new paid tier called "Gemini Advanced," which will leverage Google's most advanced Gemini Ultra model and bring new features such as YouTube music integration.

So far, Google has cautiously referred to Bard as an "experiment." With this brand reshaping, the search giant may be signaling confidence in the stability, capabilities, and potential of its AI technology to play an indispensable role in the company's core products. It also indicates Google's efforts to simplify its AI narrative, making it more understandable and acceptable to the market and end users, and setting a clear direction for the evolution of AI capabilities in the so-called Gemini era.
