Integrating AI-Powered ATC Chat into Flight Simulators

2024-01-03

X-Plane 12 and Microsoft Flight Simulator, especially in the upcoming 2024 version, strive to provide a realistic understanding of the world of flying aircraft. If you are looking for a better experience, purchasing additional peripherals can even help you practice flying real planes. Unfortunately, one area that has been noticeably lacking in reality is communication, especially with air traffic control. So far, it has been nearly impossible to achieve a two-way conversation with computerized air traffic controllers, whether during takeoff, approach, or in-flight. Like many other fields, artificial intelligence (AI) may soon change the aviation industry. Although AI's presence in games has generally been met with lukewarm enthusiasm, flight simulation games may see a significant improvement in realism. The new AI-driven ATC, initially called SmartSky.AI but now renamed SayIntentions.AI due to potential conflicts with airline names, will be launched on January 15th. It will be available through a monthly subscription model, with an estimated cost of $15-20 per month, although a free area will be provided for testing suitability. The release will be phased, initially targeting a limited number of virtual pilots to manage server load. You can register on the SayIntentions.AI website to join the waiting list. SayIntentions.AI will work in conjunction with Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane upon launch. Currently, the system uses the GPT-4 framework to listen and generate appropriate responses. SayIntentions.AI claims to use a combination of "GPT-4 and our secret recipe" to make you feel like you are conversing with a real person. It offers hundreds of voices, all trained to have the rhythm and speaking style of a real ATC.
