Rabbit and Perplexity Collaborate to Create R1: Real-Time Intelligent Search Embedded in AI Devices

2024-01-19

CES 2024 star product Rabbit announced a partnership with Perplexity to connect "dialogue-based AI answer engine" with R1, an AI gadget designed by Teenage Engineering, priced at $199 with 50,000 pre-orders. Unlike LLM, which can only reference data before a certain date, they have created an embedded search engine for R1 that provides "real-time updated answers without any knowledge cutoff date." Aravind Srinivas, co-founder of Perplexity, announced the deal during a live Spaces broadcast with Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu. He stated that the first 100,000 purchasers of Rabbit R1 will also receive a one-year subscription to Perplexity Pro. This plan includes access to updated LLMs like GPT-4, typically priced at $20 per month. In an article on X, Rabbit mentioned that Perplexity will work behind the scenes on their device, "alongside other leading LLMs yet to be announced," and without the need for a subscription. R1 features a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a scroll wheel, and a rotating camera. It is a pocket-sized universal controller suitable for various applications, capable of tasks ranging from sending messages to selecting songs to online ordering, thanks to its "large-scale action model" AI. Perplexity AI combines search with LLMs like OpenAI's GPT-3.5, competing against Google, Bing, and all other new AI contenders.
