NVIDIA's Next-Generation Blackwell Chips Fully Booked

2024-10-12

NVIDIA has announced that its next-generation Blackwell chips are fully booked for production over the next 12 months, underscoring the immense market demand for NVIDIA's graphics processing units (GPUs) even before the official release. During a series of investor meetings hosted by Morgan Stanley, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang confirmed this news and emphasized NVIDIA's strong foothold in the data center AI sector.

The surge in Blackwell orders reflects the urgent demand from customers for NVIDIA's advanced AI technology, with the product expected to see substantial shipments next year.

This development follows AMD's recent launch of the Instinct MI325X, which is designed to compete with NVIDIA's Blackwell GPU. However, NVIDIA's statement highlights the competitive gap that still exists between the two companies. Despite AMD's MI325X performing well in memory enhancements and performance improvements, NVIDIA's solid market position and sold-out Blackwell preorders indicate the challenges AMD faces in capturing market share.

Given that NVIDIA's chips are fully booked for the next year, AMD has the opportunity to attract buyers who are unable to obtain NVIDIA hardware. Companies requiring AI acceleration but unwilling to wait may consider adopting AMD's MI325X and the upcoming MI350 as viable alternatives, especially as AMD continues to improve its ecosystem and build strong partnerships. The competition in the AI hardware field is far from over, but currently, NVIDIA maintains its lead while AMD strives to catch up.
