Inflection AI Releases Android Version Pi: An AI Chatbot App Supporting Voice Interaction

2023-12-11

Inflection AI, a startup based in Palo Alto founded by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, and Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, has just announced that its AI chatbot "Pi" is now available as a dedicated application on Android. This move is expected to expose billions of users to Pi, the latest effort by the one-year-old startup to compete with OpenAI's popular ChatGPT and other emerging AI assistants, including Grok from xAI and Claude from Anthropic. The company also stated that it has improved the application's branding, making minor changes to the colors, illustrations, and Pi's logo. "Users have always appreciated a clean and refreshing aesthetic. The new iOS and Android applications continue to maintain this style while adding a touch of extra charm," it said in a blog post. What can we expect from the Pi Android application? The Pi Android application will first be launched in 35 countries, including the United States, aiming to provide a similar experience to users as the iOS version of the chatbot. Essentially, users can ask any question on any topic to receive instant answers, suggestions, or tips. What's more interesting is that, like ChatGPT, the Pi chatbot also supports voice interactions. Users can simply express their thoughts, and it can reply, forming a back-and-forth conversation. Currently, Inflection AI offers six Pi voice options for users to choose from, likening the experience to chatting on the phone. Pi was launched by the company in May and has been running on the Inflection-1 language model. However, a major upgrade is on the horizon with Inflection-2, which is said to greatly enhance its capabilities, showcasing better factual knowledge, improved style control, and significantly enhanced reasoning. For Inflection, Pi's ultimate goal is to provide people with a "sympathetic, helpful, and safe" companion that is more personalized and conversational than OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Bing, or Google's Bard. It is this personalized and emotional AI approach that sets it apart from similar products. "Pi has the ability to provide 24/7 emotional support and guidance in various situations. While others are asleep, Pi is there to chat with you at midnight, when you want to practice another language, or when you need deep reflection on potential career changes," the blog post concludes.
