Meta Tests "AI-Suggested Comments" on Instagram

2025-03-22

Instagram, owned by Meta, has begun testing a new feature that offers AI-generated comment suggestions on posts. Multiple reports indicate that users experiencing this feature will see a "starred pencil" icon next to the comment box. Upon clicking this icon, the AI generates several comment suggestions (at least three) based on the content of the post.

For instance, on fitness-related posts, Meta's AI might suggest comments like "Incredible achievement! How long have you been training for this?" or "So inspiring! Any advice for beginners?" Interestingly, users can select from these AI-suggested comments, edit them if needed, or post them directly.

Meta has confirmed this experimental feature and stated that it frequently tests new ways for users to engage with Meta AI across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This aims to enhance user experience in areas such as commenting, feeds, groups, and search functionalities.

This latest feature is designed to streamline the commenting process and encourage more active participation on the platform. However, Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta has not yet disclosed a timeline for the broader rollout of this functionality. Considering that Instagram boasts over 2 billion monthly active users, with more than 500 million daily active users, this initiative is particularly significant. The platform's largest user base is in India, estimated at approximately 362.9 million.

The introduction of AI-generated comments has sparked discussions about the authenticity of online social interactions. Some critics express concerns that this automation could lead to uniform interactions, potentially reducing the genuineness of user engagement. Additionally, there are uncertainties regarding the potential increase in spam and the ethical implications of AI-generated content.

This development comes as Meta recently launched its AI chatbot service in European countries and 21 overseas territories after addressing regulatory issues. However, the European version of the chatbot is relatively limited compared to its U.S. counterpart, offering only text-based interactions without image generation or editing capabilities.

Moreover, reports suggest that this social media company has started testing its first internally developed AI training chip. According to reports, Meta's new AI training chip is an accelerator specifically designed for AI-related computations. Unlike traditional GPUs that handle a wide range of computing tasks, dedicated accelerators are optimized for AI workloads, potentially offering advantages in power consumption and cost efficiency.
