Gmail introduces Gemini polishing feature to enhance email writing quality

2024-08-21

Google is upgrading the Gemini writing tool in Gmail to help users polish their drafted emails, the company said in a blog post. In addition to the "Formalize" and "Elaborate" options in the "Help me write" feature provided by Gemini, users can now click on "Polish" to optimize their emails. The company has also added shortcuts in the email body of Android and iOS devices to make these AI writing tools more visible. This feature is aimed at paid users who have purchased the Gemini add-on for Google One AI Premium accounts or Google Workspace. If you are one of them, when you open a new blank draft, you will see a shortcut for "Help me write", which allows Gemini to draft text for you. Once the draft has 12 or more words (whether AI-generated or not), you should see a new gray shortcut below the words for "Optimize my draft". By swiping the text with your thumb, you can choose to "Polish", "Formalize", "Elaborate", or "Shorten", or let Gemini directly write a brand new draft for you. (If the "Optimize my draft" shortcut does not appear, clicking on the pencil icon will have the same effect.)
