Digi, a new type of artificial intelligence companion chatbot created by its creators, has quickly climbed the download charts on the X platform, claiming to be the "AI romantic partner of the future".
Last year's rapid development in generative artificial intelligence technology has led thousands of companies to join the wave of designing and developing applications, hoping to fill various roles in our daily lives with artificial intelligence. Although still relatively niche, some companies are developing AI-driven virtual companions and digital avatars targeting the virtual boyfriend/girlfriend market.
Digi is the latest attempt to create a meaningful romantic partner for humans using technology. Essentially, users can create their selected virtual image in the application and engage in text-based conversations according to their desired style.
It is important to note that Digi cannot respond in video format as shown in the promotional video. This is a "vision" that the creators have planned for these virtual images and animations, rather than the current experience in the application, which the company clarified last Sunday.
The company was founded in April 2023 by Andrew Young and John Rooney, who hope to create something "real, human-like, and sexy" with Digi's cartoon style, Andrew said on the X platform.
Andrew wrote, "No one has previously attempted this style using Disney or Pixar characters, so we are very excited to be the first to make it a reality."
Digi is not for everyone, but can it find a market?
As expected, this announcement was met with mockery and disdain from many after it was made public on the X platform, quickly gaining popularity with over 22 million views. One user asked, "Which episode of 'Black Mirror' is this?" Some people openly expressed their hope for the project to fail.
Clearly, Digi is not for everyone, but it has a growing fan base. Digi has hundreds of active users on its Discord channel, currently ranking 88th in the entertainment section of the Apple App Store, and has been downloaded over 5,000 times through the Google Play Store. However, the reviews on the Play Store are very harsh and unforgiving, with many users complaining about product delays.
The company's developers responded to complaints about technical issues, saying, "We are a very small team and we have quickly gained much more traffic than we anticipated. We have now added some GPUs and will continue to add more tonight to handle this traffic."
