Study Finds: Workplace AI Positively Affects Quality of Life
The Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW) in the UK has conducted a study analyzing the relationship between employee well-being and exposure to technology. The study analyzed nearly 5000 representative workforce and found that the interaction frequency between quality of life and new workplace technologies such as wearable devices, robots, artificial intelligence, and machine learning software is negatively correlated.
The research team further stated in their report, "This is consistent with research findings that connect such technologies with increased feelings of powerlessness, enhanced insecurity, task intensification, stress, loss of meaning, anxiety, and overall poorer health."
However, not all technologies have a negative impact, as some actually contribute to employee well-being. "The results indicate that digital information and communication technologies are associated with improvements in quality of life, while newer and more advanced technologies are associated with decreased happiness."
Therefore, this research suggests that computers and messaging tools bring more freedom and flexibility to employees, but the use of smart devices or AI has not been well-received.
AI Applications in the Workplace
One of the main concerns for businesses seems to be employee productivity, utilizing artificial intelligence to handle repetitive tasks or expedite processes.
Some companies even choose to completely replace employees with AI, including tech giant IBM. As early as 2023, IBM's CEO publicly announced plans to replace nearly 8000 jobs with technology.
At that time, he pointed out that back-office functions, particularly the human resources department, would be among the first departments to face these changes.
