Discord is shutting down its AI chatbot Clyde

Discord is shutting down its experimental AI chatbot Clyde. In a statement, Discord said that the chatbot will be "disabled" at the end of this month and that after December 1st, "users will no longer be able to use Clyde in direct messages, group direct messages, or server chats".

Discord began testing Clyde's AI capabilities earlier this year, using OpenAI's model to allow the chatbot to answer questions and engage in conversations with Discord users. Since then, it has been in a limited testing phase, with the company planning to make it a fundamental component of its chat and community application.

It is currently unclear why Clyde is being shut down abruptly. It is possible that the chatbot will return as a paid Nitro-exclusive feature in the future, or Discord may have accumulated enough experience during the testing period to deem the integration of an AI chatbot unnecessary for its service. However, Discord did not provide detailed explanations for the shutdown of Clyde.

"Clyde was an experiment shared with a small number of servers," said Kellyn Slone, Discord's Director of Product Marketing, in the statement. "Discord has always been committed to bringing new features and experiences to its users. Clyde was a phase of this work, and we look forward to releasing new user experiences in the future."

Discord has been exploring various AI features, including generating AI conversation summaries. This allows Discord users to review conversations they may have missed, which is particularly useful for servers spanning multiple time zones. Discord has also been positioning its platform as a home for AI developers, providing funding and resources to help developers build AI applications for Discord.
