Microsoft to Integrate AI into Windows Notepad

2024-01-10

Microsoft has announced that 2024 will be the "Year of AI PC," and it seems that this prediction is gradually coming true. Microsoft appears to be preparing a new generative AI feature for its built-in Notepad application in Windows. Although the software giant has not made an official announcement, keen Windows observers have discovered code in the latest Windows 11 test version that suggests the upcoming "Cowriter" feature.

It appears to use a similar point system as Microsoft's Cocreator feature in Paint, which lets Windows users know how many times they can use these AI-driven features. Microsoft has not announced the pricing for these points, but it can be assumed that once users have used up their quota, the company will eventually start charging. Bing uses a similar system, and once you have used up your "daily boost," image creation through DALL-E slows down.

Other Windows testers have even discovered a waiting list for this feature, as well as Microsoft's potential marketing page for promoting its new Notepad Cowriter. The style of this image is consistent with Microsoft's marketing approach for features like Copilot in Office applications, such as Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.

This may indicate that Microsoft is about to make an official announcement about the Cowriter feature, prepare for beta testing, and then release it to all Windows 11 users, along with the generative image feature tested in Paint in the previous months.

The original Notepad was just a very simple Windows application. Recently, Microsoft has made significant improvements to Notepad in Windows 11, adding features such as dark mode, tabbed interface, character count, and automatic saving and tab recovery. Now, it is bringing AI into Notepad, giving it even more new capabilities.
