"OpenAI Counterattacks Musk's Lawsuit via Email"

2024-03-07

Last Friday, Elon Musk announced a lawsuit, and OpenAI shared their historical email communication with the Tesla CEO, stating their goal to "refute all of Elon's accusations." Elon Musk is suing OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, and others, alleging that they violated the contractual commitments established during the company's founding in 2015, when he helped create the company. The lawsuit claims that the Microsoft-backed AI company's shift towards profit-oriented goals contradicted the original agreement. On March 6th, OpenAI shared their latest blog post on X, focusing on their perspectives and views on the lawsuit. In this version, they expanded on three specific points, including: 1. We realize that building AGI will require significantly more resources than we initially imagined. 2. We and Elon recognize that acquiring these resources requires a for-profit entity. 3. We advance our mission by building widely available beneficial tools. The blog's authors, including CEO Sam Altman, continued, "We are saddened by the actions of someone we deeply admire, who inspired us to pursue higher goals, then told us we would fail, launched a competitor, and now sues us when we make meaningful progress towards OpenAI's mission without him." "We remain focused on advancing our mission, and there is still a long way to go. As we continue to improve our tools, we are excited to deploy these systems and empower everyone." Email correspondence between OpenAI and Elon Musk dates back to 2015 when the company was just established. Elon Musk helped co-found OpenAI but later left in 2018. OpenAI released emails attempting to refute his claims. In the alleged first email from the billionaire entrepreneur, it stated, "We need to choose a number much larger than $100 million to avoid sounding hopeless..." The email also explained that a "$1 billion funding commitment" might be more appropriate. When discussing the next steps for OpenAI, the blog details, "Elon wanted majority ownership, initial board control, and to be CEO." In the midst of these discussions, he withheld funding. The blog post continues, "We couldn't agree to Elon's for-profit terms because we felt it contradicted the mission..." In an email apparently from Elon Musk, shared by OpenAI, he said that OpenAI should "treat Tesla as a cash cow." In the final publicly released email, co-founder Ilya Sutskever further explained the tool. The author stated in the blog that Elon understood that this task did not mean open-sourcing AGI, and they later shared that Elon's response was "yes."
