OpenAI collaborates with Stack Overflow to enhance model performance

2024-05-07

OpenAI and developer platform Stack Overflow have announced a collaboration that could enhance the performance of AI models and incorporate more technical information into ChatGPT. OpenAI will have access to Stack Overflow's API and receive feedback from the developer community to improve the performance of its AI models. In return, OpenAI will provide attribution to Stack Overflow in ChatGPT, linking to its content. If users ask coding or technical questions to ChatGPT, they will see more information from the Stack Overflow knowledge base. The two companies stated in a press release that this will "facilitate deeper interaction with the content." Stack Overflow will utilize OpenAI's large language model to expand its previously announced generative AI application, Overflow AI. Overflow AI will add AI-driven natural language search functionality to Stack Overflow. Stack Overflow mentioned that it plans to introduce more AI products for its users by combining feedback from its community and internal testing of OpenAI models. The first set of integrations will be launched in the first half of this year, although Stack Overflow did not specify which integrations will be rolled out first. In February of this year, Stack Overflow reached a similar agreement with Google, where Gemini, provided to Google Cloud users, can directly obtain coding suggestions from Stack Overflow. Developers have relied on Stack Overflow for years to answer coding questions. Stack Overflow underwent significant hiring in 2022 but laid off 28% of its employees in October. The company did not provide a reason for the layoffs; however, this move coincided with the rise of AI-assisted coding. In 2022, Stack Overflow temporarily banned users from sharing replies from ChatGPT on its website.
