Meta AI Research Lead Plans to Depart

2025-04-02

Joelle Pineau, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence Research at Meta, has announced her plans to leave the company in a Facebook post on Tuesday. Having led FAIR, Meta's internal AI research lab under Yann LeCun, for over two years, Pineau will step down in May.

Pineau's departure comes as Meta is ramping up its investment in artificial intelligence, with plans to allocate $65 billion toward AI infrastructure in 2025.

In a statement to Bloomberg News, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that the company hasn't yet identified a successor for Pineau but is actively seeking one. Last year, Meta restructured its organization, bringing its AI research division under the leadership of Chief Product Officer Chris Cox.

As for Pineau, she stated that she intends to take some time off before embarking on an unnamed "new adventure."
