Canva has recently unveiled a set of new AI-powered features on its platform, including an AI assistant, the ability to create applications through prompts, spreadsheet support, and AI-driven editing tools.

The newly launched AI feature is called Canva AI. Its AI assistant can execute various tasks based on user instructions, such as generating images, offering design ideas (e.g., social media assets or print models), and even writing copy and creating documents. Moreover, with a new tool named Canva Code, users can leverage the AI assistant to build mini-applications like interactive maps or custom calculators, which can be integrated into designs. This functionality was developed in collaboration with Anthropic.

Cameron Adams, Canva's Chief Product Officer, highlighted that the company has always encouraged teams to create interactive prototypes, as static mockups often fail to fully capture user expectations. Observing the extensive use of AI for prototyping within internal teams, Canva decided to make this capability accessible to all users, enabling easy programming and creation of interactive experiences.

In terms of image editing, Canva has introduced several new AI-powered features. One tool allows users to modify elements in photos with a single click, while another provides an automated background generator that adjusts lighting and layout. These enhancements aim to strengthen Canva’s competitive edge in the image editing space, positioning it alongside tools like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.

For enterprise users, Canva launched a product last year tailored to large teams, incorporating features like single sign-on and access management tools. In the recent update, Canva added Canva Sheets, a spreadsheet tool equipped with Magic Insights, which extracts valuable insights from data. Additionally, Magic Charts automatically transforms raw data into branded visuals, adding graphics and logos. Canva Sheets integrates seamlessly with platforms like HubSpot, Statista, and Google Analytics, allowing users to import data effortlessly.

Despite its advantages, the integration of AI in design tools has sparked debates. Artists are concerned about their work being used without permission to train AI models, while the growing prevalence of AI poses a challenge to creative design roles. According to Cameron Adams, the incorporation of AI does not signify a conflict between AI and creativity but rather brings growth and opportunities to the industry. He believes that integrating AI tools will lead to changes and adaptations across design, product management, engineering, marketing, and sales.

Notably, Canva recently laid off some technical writers, just nine months after its co-founder encouraged employees to maximize the use of AI applications. However, Canva clarified that these layoffs were unrelated to AI tool development and were instead part of a broader company restructuring effort.
