OpenAI announced Altman's dismissal on Friday, stating only that the company "no longer had confidence in his ability to lead." In response to a post by former Yammer CEO David Sacks on X, Musk stated that given the "risks and power of advanced AI, the public should know why the board felt they had to make such a drastic decision." Musk was a former board member of OpenAI but left the company in 2018, citing conflicts of interest with Tesla. However, Musk later told CNBC that he had concerns about the company's potential impact on society. It is worth noting that Musk's own AI company is likely to benefit from the current turmoil at OpenAI. One possible reason for Altman's dismissal is the tension among the company's leadership regarding the dangers of AI to humanity. Altman was actively seeking funding to expand the development of the technology, while other board members called for the company to do more to mitigate potential threats. According to The New York Times, prior to Altman's dismissal, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever had created a "super-alignment" team within the company to ensure that future versions of GPT-4, the technology behind ChatGPT, would be harmless to humans.
