Geoffrey Hinton Addresses Decision to Dismiss Sam Altman After Winning Nobel Prize

2024-10-10

This week, Geoffrey Hinton was awarded the Nobel Prize for his foundational contributions to the field of artificial neural networks, earning him the title of "Godfather of Artificial Intelligence." In his acceptance speech on Tuesday, Professor Hinton mentioned one of his students, implicitly referring to Ilya Sutskever, the former Chief Scientist at OpenAI, who had previously taken decisive actions against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Hinton stated, "I am incredibly fortunate to have had numerous exceptionally intelligent students who surpassed me in brilliance and significantly advanced progress. They have all achieved remarkable successes subsequently. Notably, one of my students was involved in the events that led to Sam Altman's dismissal."

It has been reported that the incident Hinton alluded to involves the OpenAI board's November 2023 vote to remove Altman from his position. Sutskever communicated this decision to Altman via video conference but later expressed regret. Hinton appears to view Altman's ousting as a victory in the realm of AI safety, a field he has long advocated for. However, this victory has been short-lived, as Altman currently holds greater control over OpenAI than before and is likely to soon acquire company shares.
