According to The Information, Google is expected to preview its generative AI product Gemini, which competes with ChatGPT, through the web as early as this week. With OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, recovering from recent board turmoil and the firing and rehiring of Sam Altman, the search giant hopes to catch up. Google has delayed the release of Gemini for some time. Its generative AI chatbot promises to be more powerful than the current offering, Bard, which has failed to gain consumer popularity like ChatGPT. Gemini's powerful AI model comes from a stable company, while OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus registration is currently paused, and the highly anticipated GPT Store is nowhere to be found, making Gemini even more eye-catching. If the virtual preview of Gemini does happen this week, it may be a scaled-down version of the originally planned full release. According to reports, CEO Sundar Pichai is said to have canceled a series of live Gemini launch events scheduled for early December. Media reports suggest that Google found Gemini to be unreliable when handling non-English language queries. Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. If the preview of Gemini is real, it will alleviate some of Google's burdens as the company's leading position in generative AI has been shaken this year. The company is facing pressure from investors to release Gemini quickly to catch up with Microsoft and OpenAI. However, the full release of Gemini may have to wait until sometime in 2024. According to Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, Gemini is multimodal, meaning it can process images, sounds, and text simultaneously, similar to ChatGPT-4. This AI is built on a reinforcement learning system that can plan and solve problems.
