OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Resigns, Executive Changes Draw Attention

2024-09-26

OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, has announced her departure from the company. In a post on a certain platform, she explained, "I made this decision to create more time and space for myself to pursue personal exploration. Currently, my top priority is to ensure a smooth transition for the company, maintaining the strong momentum we have established."

Apart from Murati, OpenAI has experienced additional leadership changes, including the departure of Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and Vice President of Post-Training Barret Zoph. Notably, McGrew had introduced their "reasoning" model to The Verge and was interviewed just two weeks ago. In response to these changes, CEO Sam Altman stated in another post addressing employees that these decisions were made independently and amicably.

Murati's departure brings to mind the boardroom upheaval a year ago, when CEO Sam Altman was temporarily ousted and Murati assumed the role of interim leader. During her six-year tenure, she not only spearheaded the launch of ChatGPT but also successfully introduced OpenAI's text-to-image generator, DALL-E, making significant contributions to the company's growth.

Regarding the leadership changes, Altman expressed his understanding and acceptance in a letter to employees: "Leadership turnover is a natural part of a company's evolution, especially in a rapidly growing and high-demand environment like OpenAI. I won't deny the challenges these changes bring, but we are not an ordinary company. Mira explained her reasons to me—she wanted to take this step in the most appropriate way during a time of robust company growth. I respect and understand her decision."

This announcement coincides with the upcoming week before OpenAI's annual developer conference, Dev Day, scheduled to take place in San Francisco. Last year, shortly after the inaugural Dev Day concluded, the company experienced the industry-shaking boardroom coup.

From an external perspective, OpenAI appears to be in a flourishing phase of growth. They have recently secured billions of dollars in funding, and Altman is set to receive a 7% stake in the company. Notably, OpenAI is on the verge of transitioning into a for-profit entity, marking a new chapter in its development.
