Google Invests in Data Centers and Launches AI Skills Training Program
Google announced that it will make a large-scale investment in its data center infrastructure in the United States and launch a new program aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) skills training. The tech giant plans to invest $1 billion to expand its three major data center campuses in Virginia, bringing the total investment in the state to over $4 billion. Additionally, Google will invest $2 billion to build a new data center campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In addition to infrastructure investments, Google's philanthropic organization, Google.org, has established a $75 million AI Opportunity Fund. This fund aims to provide free basic AI skills training to 1 million Americans from diverse backgrounds. Google.org will collaborate with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and other sectors to offer accessible AI training programs.
As an integral part of this initiative, Google has launched the "Google AI Foundations" course, developed in collaboration with Grow with Google and AI experts from various teams within the company. The course aims to teach fundamental AI skills that can be applied in daily life and work, without requiring a degree or prior experience.
The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and Goodwill are among the first beneficiaries of the Google AI Opportunity Fund. With this funding, IVMF will provide the "AI Foundations" course to over 1,800 veterans and military families and assist more than 2,000 individuals in enrolling in Google's cybersecurity certificate program. Since 2017, Goodwill has helped 400,000 Americans complete Google's digital skills training courses, and now they will also offer the "AI Foundations" course to underserved communities free of charge.
Google also plans to collaborate with employers such as Citigroup and educational institutions like Miami Dade College to expand the coverage of AI skills training programs. The company believes that collaboration is key to ensuring that workers and local communities have access to AI training opportunities.
