Turning Adversity into Opportunity: Reflections and Prospects of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, after Being Fired

2023-12-11

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman experienced a tumultuous time in the field of artificial intelligence after being fired by the board of directors. Before he resumed his position and appointed new board members, the company's president and co-founder Greg Brockman also temporarily stepped down, and there was a risk of employee resignations. Mr. Altman spoke with host Trevor Noah on the "What Now" podcast and said he learned a lot from this incident but also paid a significant price. "I gained empathy and recompiled my values, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. But it was also painful and very unfair to me personally," he said. Altman learned about his dismissal while watching a Formula One race in Las Vegas. "I didn't watch any races that weekend. I was in my hotel room, answered a phone call, and then I was fired," he said. His phone was bombarded with text messages, and even iMessage crashed, leaving him unable to respond. He said he hadn't thought about returning to OpenAI, but he wanted to continue creating general artificial intelligence. "This feels like a dream. I'm confused and disoriented. It doesn't feel real," he said. After the storm subsided, Mr. Altman was named "CEO of the Year" by Time magazine in recognition of his contributions to the technology industry.
