In the Wall Street Journal's "The Future of Everything" podcast, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff shared his unique perspectives on the future development of artificial intelligence. He believes that the future of AI lies not in merely expanding language models, such as training bots like ChatGPT, but in the application of autonomous agents.
Benioff stated, "I genuinely believe we are nearing the limits of language models." He mentioned that in recent years, the "appeal" of language models like ChatGPT has led ordinary consumers to have excessively high expectations of AI's capabilities. However, the real technological breakthroughs will stem from autonomous agents—these agents capable of independently performing tasks such as sales communication or marketing activities—which are significantly important for enhancing business efficiency and transforming work practices.
Salesforce has already provided clients with pre-built and customizable AI agents designed to automate customer service tasks. Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg, OpenAI is set to launch its own agent products that can perform tasks such as writing code or booking travel.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has also expressed his belief that in the future, we will work alongside agents and "AI employees." Benioff concurs, asserting that these autonomous agents will offer us incredible tools to boost productivity, enhance employee capabilities, increase profits and revenues, and establish higher-fidelity relationships with customers.
However, Benioff cautions that current AI technology is far from reaching the levels depicted in movies. He points out that the general public has gained awareness of the potent capabilities of AI agents through films like "The Terminator" and "Minority Report," but the scenarios portrayed in these movies are still far from reality.
He criticized certain industry insiders and AI evangelists for overstating the technology's capabilities and misleading those who could benefit from current applications. Benioff stated, "This misinformation about AI spread by AI clergy is a significant detriment to our ambitious customers."
He emphasized that while AI can indeed offer us numerous benefits, our lives today are not akin to the scenarios depicted in "Minority Report" or "The Terminator." He referenced the 1983 film "WarGames" and expressed hope that we will never experience such a life, where AI technology poses a risk of triggering global disasters.
Benioff's insights illuminate the future trajectory of artificial intelligence and remind us to maintain rationality and vigilance in pursuing technological advancements, avoiding being misled by unrealistic technological propaganda.
