OpenAI has introduced a new feature in its chatbot ChatGPT that enables users to schedule tasks and set up automated reminders. This update highlights ChatGPT's progression towards more proactive AI capabilities.
The new functionality, currently in beta testing, allows users to establish one-time or recurring reminders through straightforward chat commands. For instance, ChatGPT can alert users about an upcoming passport expiration, deliver daily weather updates, or send weekly weekend plans.
Users can manage these tasks via a dedicated "Tasks" page on the ChatGPT website or directly through chat commands. This feature is available to Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, supporting up to 10 active tasks during the trial phase. Task notifications will be sent via push notifications or email but can only be managed within the web application for now.
Specifically, users can configure desired tasks for ChatGPT either from the chat window or the "Tasks" section, such as scheduling a weekly global news summary, receiving personalized daily workout routines, or setting future reminders.
Leveraging the GPT-4o model, this feature is accessed through a specialized dropdown menu within the app. Users can specify their requirements and timing preferences, such as requesting a reminder for an anniversary next week or scheduling a daily briefing at a particular time.
Task creation can be done directly through conversations with ChatGPT or managed via the "Tasks" page. Notifications ensure users receive alerts even when they are not actively using the platform. Presently, each user can maintain up to 10 active tasks, a limitation aimed at keeping system stability during the testing phase.
The new functionality is being rolled out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, offering support for desktop, mobile, and browser notifications. However, the "Tasks" page is currently exclusive to the web version, with features like voice task creation and file uploads yet to be supported. Compatibility with Windows applications is expected by the end of the first quarter.
By introducing task scheduling, OpenAI demonstrates its commitment to enhancing ChatGPT into a more capable and autonomous assistant. While current features are relatively basic, such as creating reminders and sending regular updates, this marks a step towards developing systems that anticipate user needs. This aligns with the broader trend in AI development where assistants play increasingly significant roles in both personal and professional settings.
The task scheduling feature exemplifies AI's ongoing effort to simplify life, achieving this goal through timely reminders and notifications.
