Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google's augmented reality project, announced for the first time in 2023, is gradually taking shape. Qualcomm's CEO discussed the latest progress of this collaboration and how it relies on the popularity of smart glasses in an interview with CNBC.

"What I expect to achieve through this collaboration is to have everyone who owns a smartphone purchase a pair of smart glasses to go with it," said Cristiano Amon. "I believe we need to reach a stage where wearing smart glasses feels no different from wearing regular glasses or sunglasses. Only then can we achieve scalability."

Initially, industry observers believed that the purpose of this collaboration was to weaken Apple's Vision Pro's market position by launching cheaper head-mounted devices, but the team's major revelation was only the pairing of smart glasses with devices.

"Artificial intelligence will run on the device and in the cloud," Amon said. "It will run on both the glasses and the phone, but ultimately it will bring a completely new experience."

Qualcomm has always publicly stated its adoption of the Snapdragon X series chips to power laptops, personal computers, and mobile devices, which also drive the AI Copilot+ feature. The San Diego-based company has become an important player in the domestic chip manufacturing field and has consolidated its position as one of the largest import hardware buyers.

Qualcomm's latest product, the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip, was released in Berlin on Wednesday, aiming to compete with products from Intel and AMD, both of which have benefited from the Chip and Science Act passed by Congress in 2022.
