Microsoft 365 Copilot New Feature Unveiled, Enhancing AI Integration in Office Applications

2024-09-18

Microsoft recently announced new features for its Microsoft 365 Copilot monthly subscription service ($30 per user per month), aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence integration in Office applications. These updates include Python integration in Excel, enhanced AI storytelling builder in PowerPoint, AI-assisted draft optimization in Word, and new capabilities for Copilot in organizing Outlook inboxes. In Excel, Microsoft has combined Python support with Copilot, allowing users to easily perform advanced analysis on spreadsheet data. This feature is now in public preview and available to all Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers. Additionally, Copilot supports functions such as XLOOKUP and SUMIF, conditional formatting, and can generate more charts and pivot tables. Copilot in PowerPoint has also been improved, with its AI storytelling builder able to create slide drafts more quickly. In the future, this tool will also use company brand templates and insert approved images from the SharePoint library. In Microsoft Teams, Copilot will be able to summarize text chats and conversations in meetings, helping organizers ensure that no unanswered questions are missed. This feature is expected to be launched later this month. For Outlook users, Copilot has added a "Prioritize my inbox" feature, which automatically sorts emails by priority. Later this year, users will also be able to train Copilot to recognize important subjects, keywords, or contacts for marking emails as high priority. Copilot in Word will also be upgraded, allowing users to reference data from emails, meetings, and documents for easier integration of attachments or meeting highlights. Additionally, Copilot will be integrated into OneDrive, summarizing and comparing up to five files to help users identify differences. Despite reports of bugs and user resistance to the $30 monthly price, Microsoft stated that 60% of Fortune 500 companies are using Copilot, with daily active users nearly doubling each quarter. It is worth noting that these figures may include free version users of Copilot. Furthermore, Vodafone has decided to purchase Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses for 68,000 out of its 100,000 employees after a trial, becoming an important customer for the service.
