Musk Announces All X Premium Users to Gain Access to Grok AI This Week
After Elon Musk's xAI company successfully open-sourced its revolutionary Grok language model in March, Musk announced another major development on Tuesday. It is reported that the highly anticipated X company will soon open its Grok chatbot feature to more paying subscribers. This move has attracted widespread attention on Musk's X platform, as he explicitly stated in a tweet that Grok will be available to Premium subscribers this week, not just the previous high-end users of Premium+.
This move undoubtedly reveals xAI's determination to directly compete with other industry giants in the chatbot field, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude. It also shows that X company is actively seeking to expand its subscriber base to address the challenges it currently faces.
At the same time, X platform is facing a decline in user numbers. According to the latest data from Sensor Tower, as of February this year, X's usage in the United States has declined by 18% compared to the previous year, and it has dropped by 23% since Musk took over. In addition, Musk's attitude towards advertisers has sparked widespread controversy, which may further affect the company's revenue prospects. Sensor Tower's data shows that as of October 2022, 75 out of the top 100 US advertisers on X have stopped advertising on the platform.
In the face of such challenges, providing access to AI chatbots may be an effective way for X company to retain users. In the current market environment, there is an increasing demand for more intelligent and personalized services, and Grok chatbot can meet this demand. By providing such a service, X company may be able to prevent users from migrating to other platforms, such as decentralized platform Mastodon and Meta's Instagram Threads, among other competitors.
Although Musk did not disclose when Grok will be available to all X users, he made it clear that it will be "enabled" for all Premium subscribers "later this week". This move will undoubtedly attract more users to upgrade to Premium subscription services, further increasing the company's revenue.
It is worth mentioning that X Premium, as the company's mid-tier subscription service, has a relatively affordable price starting at $8 per month (web version) or $84 per year. Compared to the previously exclusive Grok for Premium+ subscribers, its price advantage is obvious. Premium+ is priced at $16 per month or a whopping $168 per year, which may be a burden for many users.
What sets Grok chatbot apart is its ability to answer topics that are typically off-limits for other AI chatbots, such as conspiracy theories or more controversial political views. Musk described it as having a "rebellious trait" and being able to provide users with more diverse and personalized answers. In addition, Grok can also access real-time X data, which is an advantage that its competitors cannot match.
However, it is worth noting that although Grok chatbot has many advantages, the value of this data will also decrease if X company continues to lose users. Therefore, for X company, how to expand its subscriber base while maintaining and improving user engagement will be an urgent problem to solve.
