Amazon cuts hundreds of jobs to support its AI development

Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs in its popular voice assistant Alexa department and reallocating more resources to artificial intelligence. In a notice sent to employees on Friday, Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Fire TV at Amazon, wrote that the company is eliminating certain positions as it abandons certain projects. Rausch wrote in the letter, "As we continue to innovate, we are adjusting some roles to better align with our key priorities and what we know is most important to customers - maximizing our resources and efforts, focusing on generative artificial intelligence." He stated that "hundreds" of positions will be cut, but did not provide a more specific number. Based in Seattle, Amazon is fiercely competing with other tech companies to capitalize on the trend of generative artificial intelligence. The company has implemented a series of AI projects in recent months, ranging from integrating the technology into customer reviews to providing services that allow developers to build their own AI tools on its AWS cloud infrastructure. In September, Amazon announced updates to Alexa, incorporating more generative AI capabilities. The layoffs announced on Friday will affect employees in the United States, Canada, and India. Previously, Amazon's gaming and music teams also underwent layoffs, and combined with the layoffs that occurred in the second half of last year and earlier this year, a total of 27,000 employees were affected. Now, Amazon's Alexa department is also impacted by the layoffs.
