Google Pixel 9A with Limited Gemini AI Features

The Google Pixel 9A is equipped with the same Tensor G4 chip found in high-end models, but its built-in Gemini AI capabilities have been streamlined to a text-only version. According to Ars Technica, Google has confirmed that due to the lower memory capacity (8GB) of the Pixel 9A, it cannot access certain AI features, such as the AI-powered Pixel Screenshots app.

In contrast to the Gemini Nano XS model featured in the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel 9A incorporates a smaller AI model: Gemini Nano 1.0 XXS. The Pixel 9 comes with 12GB of RAM, while the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro Fold boast 16GB of RAM. On the Pixel 9A, the Gemini Nano XXS operates only when needed and does not run continuously in the background.

Ars Technica also verified that, apart from the lack of the Pixel Screenshots feature — which makes screenshots searchable — the Pixel 9A does not support Call Notes, an AI-generated summary of phone calls. However, the Pixel 9A can still provide audio summaries within the Recorder app, as this functionality relies on transcription.

Notably, last year Google introduced Gemini AI features only on the Pixel 8 Pro, excluding the Pixel 8. However, after user feedback, Google eventually rolled out the feature on this mid-range device. According to information disclosed to Ars Technica, the Pixel 8 utilizes the Gemini Nano XXS model.
