Starting from May 15th, all Google Photos users will have access to AI editing tools. Previously, features like Magic Editor, Photo Unblur, and Magic Eraser were only available on Pixel devices or for a fee. Now, these features will be free for a wider user base, although there will be some limitations.
This expansion of AI-driven features marks a significant shift in Google's strategy, aiming to make professional-grade editing tools more accessible to a larger audience. "With the right editing tools, your photos can truly shine," said Dina Berrada, Product Manager of Google Photos. "We are bringing these features to more people."
Among these AI-supported features, Photo Unblur stands out for its ability to sharpen and clarify blurry images, while Magic Eraser allows users to easily remove unwanted objects or blemishes from photos.
Another tool, Portrait Light, enables effortless adjustment of lighting position and brightness in portrait photos.
Perhaps the most exciting addition is Magic Editor, a generative AI tool launched alongside Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. With Magic Editor, users can perform complex editing operations, such as repositioning subjects or changing the color of the sky, through simple and intuitive actions. Android and iOS users will receive 10 free Magic Editor saves per month, while Pixel owners and Google One subscribers (2TB and above plans) will enjoy unlimited access.
To use these features, devices must meet minimum requirements, including a 64-bit chip, 4GB of RAM, and iOS 15 or Android 8.0. The rollout of these features will begin on May 15th and continue over the following weeks.
While these tools bring new creative possibilities, they also highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the evolving nature of photography and the role AI plays in shaping our perception of reality.
