Bloomberg reports that Apple has expanded internal testing of its Xcode programming software's new generative artificial intelligence features and plans to release these features to third-party developers later this year. It is reported that Apple is also exploring the potential uses of generative AI in consumer-facing products, such as automatic playlist creation in Apple Music, AI-powered slide creation in Keynote, or AI chatbot-like search functionality in Spotlight.
Search enhancements will allow iOS and macOS users to make natural language requests, similar to using ChatGPT, to obtain weather forecasts or perform deep-level functions within applications.
While other tech giants have been more prominent in releasing AI research and products, Apple has recently released an open-source machine learning framework called MLX, making it easier to train AI models on Apple silicon chips. They have also released an AI model for text-to-image editing called MGIE and an AI animation tool called Keyframer.
Similar to Microsoft's GitHub Copilot and Amazon's CodeWhisperer, Apple is developing programming tools that utilize large language models to predict and complete code snippets, and potentially write code to test applications.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts that as of November 2023, GitHub Copilot has reached one million paid users. Since its launch, GitHub has added more features to Copilot, including a real-time chat function that guides programmers and points out potential code issues. Microsoft has stated that more news about Copilot and developer AI will be announced at the Build 2024 event in May, while Apple may announce more about its AI plans at its annual WWDC event for developers later this year.
Compared to its counterparts at Google and Microsoft, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been more conservative in his comments about generative AI. However, he confirmed during this month's investor conference call that more generative AI features will be launched this year. According to Bloomberg, Apple executives showcased many AI features of Xcode to the Apple board at the end of last year.
